I apologize to those that haven’t heard the news just yet, but @verapazstudio will officially be closing down MA operations next week. There is more to come on why, but ultimately the state of Massachusetts will not certify my vehicle under their “Mobile Unit” certification.

I have been working for the past 3 months behind the scenes trying to get this vehicle formally inspected and approved. This process has been an ordeal, and there is a department that appears to keep moving the goal posts to keep me from getting approved. After all of this dedicated time, fighting and headaches, I have decided to move my business to a more accommodating state that values my business.

I will officially be closing operations here in MA on 8/22/23.

I will intend to reopen fully in Long Island, NY by 10/1/23, serving both Nassau and Suffolk County.

Designing and building the electrical system for this bus was definitely one of the more complex projects I have ever had to complete. Needless to say I was terrified, but took my time, followed the rules and specs and just focused on one device at a time.

Doing a project like this made me calculate the power needs and consumption of every item that will be on the bus. Then I needed to work backwards to design something that can support all of that. I am essentially running a standard 250A system equivalent to most homes.

I struggled a lot with temperature and humidity when I first started painting in early Spring. The temps would drop at night and when it rained humidity skyrocketed. Making it take way longer for things to dry and caused issues with paint not adhering great where the bus subframe was bc the exterior temp was so much lower than the interior temps. Needless to say, it was a headache and took 2x-3x longer than expected, but it came out great and the floor continued to be the most commented part of the renovation.

Attention to detail pays off.

Had to add an exhaust fan to help control the temp and humidity on the inside while I am working. Cutting a hole in the roof is easily one of the more stressful things I had to do. There is no fixing it. But hoora! It worked!

The benefit of custom building everything myself is that I can add options precisely catered to my needs. Here I created some satisfying drawer dividers for my tools and then added some nice padding to keep them protected while I am driving and bouncing around.

This was my first time using marble effect spray paint. What do you think? Does it look like real stone? That is just painted 3/4” plywood.

I did however have an issue with the clear coat on the first attempt at this counter. Happened to have the sunniest afternoon the day I was working on it and it caused drying problems with the clear coat. Had to sand it down, fill some cracks caused by the clear coat not leveling well bc the sun made it dry too fast. Set me back a couple of days as I had to sand, fill, sand, repaint sand and repaint and finally re did the marble effect. Hopefully tomorrow I can reattempt the clear coat in a more controlled environment. Fingers crossed it works better next time around!

Flooring has officially been completed. Took some time to cut out all the spaces for the tracks and still keep the pattern consistent, but it really transforms the space. I decided to extend the flooring further down one more landing. Makes the transition feel more natural and complete. I also had to order some extra tiles, so it took a little longer.

One of the scariest tasks on this project had to be cutting out openings in the body to add access ports for water in/out and power in. It is scary cutting a hole in your vehicle that is perfectly fine as it is. As you can see, the walls are kind of thick and fortunately already come with some insulation unlike some other work vans I have seen around. Here is an example of a classic skin fade. I would call this a mid-high bald face. Typically you will ask for a low, mid, and high bald fade, but I find that it is just a general rule of thumb. As what looks best and how gradually you should fade I think depends on many favors like hair color, density, as well as head shape, bumps, and folds. You aren’t just a piece of meat I am rushing to bang a fade out on to, I take the time to give you the best fade for you.
